Arthur Ashe Kids Day 2013; Michelle Obama (and my family)

arthur ashe kids day 2013

I have wanted to take my kids to Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day for a while, but the timing just never worked out with our schedule until this year. My family went as media this past Saturday and enjoyed the day. I went early in the morning while Reggie and the kids joined me later. It was good to see so many families out to see the days’ festivities and many of them expressed excitement that First Lady Michelle Obama would be speaking at the stadium show later in the day.

I must admit that I was “feeling” my age during the media interview and photo sessions with the young talent. Ariana Grande, Austin Mahone, Fifth Harmony, Coco Jones, Lawson, Cazzette Missy Franklin, Jeff Sutphen and Quddus were all there. Honestly, I only knew who Ariana Grande, Coco Jones and Missy Franklin were, but the screaming young fans at the stadium show knew about them. (It turns out that Austin Mahone is the “next Justin Bieber”?!) The only question that my kids wanted me to ask was if the soft voice that Ariana Grande uses to speak in “Sam and Cat” was her real speaking voice. (The answer was “no”.)

My family joined me for the stadium show and that was a lot of fun. We were able to see some tennis greats (Serena Williams, Roger Federe and more) compete in a target hitting game to win money for their favorite charities in addition to hearing the musical talent perform and the First Lady speak about her “Let’s Move” initiative. All in all, we truly enjoyed this event.
