Summer Fridays, Smoothies, Sunglasses & More (Friday Favorites)

unified kids

We made it to the end of the school year here in NYC. Yay! I’m happy that both my (teacher) husband Reggie and my sons enjoyed relatively smooth and successful years. Sean’s teacher wrote on his report card that his assignment/goal is to have FUN every day. Now, that’s summer homework that I feel great about! On to my Friday Favorites…

Kids: In a world constantly marred by division, kids give me hope. The picture above of my son Michael and his friends on the last day of school is the perfect example. They are very different – Black, White, Asian, Muslim, Jewish (and as my kid would say of himself, “from a Christian family because I’m not old enough to make that decision”) BUT they all enjoyed hanging out and having fun together – eating at Shake Shack and watching a silly movie that day. Our society would do well to imitate them!

Smoothies: I’m in a “smoothies for summer breakfast” season. The kids enjoy them too!

Sunglasses:  My youngest son already has eye health challenges so I’ll do whatever I can to keep his eyes as strong as possible. The 2014 post Why I don’t let my kids go out in the sun without sunglasses includes one easy thing – reminding kids to wear sunglasses. (I had no idea that UV rays had so much potential to damage a child’s eyes!)

Summer Fridays: If you work in corporate America, do you get “Summer Fridays”? I vaguely remember getting 1/2 or whole days off on Fridays during the summer. Anyway, I decided to give myself Fridays off during the summer this year. I’m still working out the details regarding how to juggle work with my other responsibilities, but taking Fridays off from work is definitely part of the plan. My kids jokingly asked me, “WHAT’S THE PLAN???”  (They know their mama so well. 🙂 )

Have a great weekend!
