World Maker Faire New York 2015 Made STEM Fun

World Maker Faire New York 2015 was especially great this year. Since there were a variety of makers and projects, there really was a little something for everyone to enjoy. Michael and I covered the Faire (as Mom in the City media) yesterday. It was on fire!

Since Michael is really a fan of 3D printing, we attended “The Future of 3D Desktop Printing” discussion between Formlabs’ co-founder Max Lobovsky and Matthew Stultz of Make. Highlights included a discussion regarding open source 3D printing programs, 3D technology trends, challenges surrounding patents and the future of 3D printing for the home. I especially appreciated that the two speakers (respectfully) disagreed on most of the topics!

“This Maker Faire was better than previous ones,” Michael commented at one point during the day. “Perhaps it’s because I’m older.” I think that it was a little bit of both – a wider variety of offerings and his age. Either way, below were some of the highlights from the day:

1. PancakeBot (3D technology for pancakes!)

2. The RoboTigers

3. The Kaleidodome

4. Blue Stamp Engineering (High school students were demonstrating their projects and showing other kids how to operate them.)

5. The Urban Assembly Maker Academy (I loved that it was hands-on. The booth basically had some aluminum foil, toothpicks and a couple of other materials. The person told the kids to make a boat with the materials and see how many pennies they could place in the boat before it sank. I was impressed that Michael made a little aluminum foil boat that held 65 pennies on his first try!)

6. Raspberry Pi

7. The Google area

8. The Microsoft area (Highlights included the “your face in lights” selfie-curtain and a speech translator.)

9. Maker State(Oculus Rift and Minecraft programming)
