Post image for Writing: (Facebook is my “time suck”.)

This month, I am participating in #Reverb10. Personally, I am taking it as a chance to reflect on the past year and to make plans/prayers for the next year. There will be a new prompt each day that I will respond to here (Monday – Friday). I don’t blog on the weekends, so I will probably list shorter answers over on my Facebook page and/or on Twitter on Saturdays and Sundays. Feel free to join in!

December 2 Writing.
What do you do each day that doesn’t contribute to your writing — and can you eliminate it?
(Author: Leo Babauta)

I have to alter this prompt a bit, because I don’t desire to be a full time writer. The principle of eliminating things in my day that don’t contribute to my personal goals is helpful though. The answer that I (finally) came up with is: facebook. Earlier this year, I conquered my obsession with Twitter. Now, I can easily set a certain amount of time that I want to be on it and stick to it. Of course, there are exceptions – like today when I was communicating with friends as we all tried to get a spot at next year’s Disney Social Media Moms Conference – but I can manage Twitter.

Facebook is another story. I really didn’t like it before this year, because it was too “busy” visually for my clutterphobe eyes. It has a cleaner design now though. Since my family and offline friends are on Facebook as well as my online friends, I can easily be on it more than a helpful amount of time. It can be a major time suck (what I call time wasters). I don’t think that I will eliminate it completely, because it is a way for me to stay connected with people whom I don’t get the chance to see as much as I would wish. Rather, I will do what I did with twitter when it was new and intriguing – set and keep time limits when I’m on it. Can I do it? Yes, I can. (I think so!)

Is there anything that you need to eliminate (or minimize) in your daily life?
