Have you heard of Maghound yet? The best way that I can describe it… it is to magazines what Netflix is to movies. Basically, Maghound is a magazine membership service. You sign up and select your desired amount of magazines. The neat thing is that you can change your magazine selections as often as you like. So (in theory) you could get a different set of magazines each month. When I (an avowed lover of all print writing – including magazines) was asked to review this service, I jumped at the opportunity.

First, I signed up and selected my magazines. (I received a free one-year trial of the 3 magazine titles per month plan. Other options include a 5 and 7 magazines per month plans.) The sign up process was simple. Now that I have been with the service for a little over a month, I am sharing my thoughts below.
Two things that I really like:
1. I can change my magazine choices whenever I like. If I wanted to, I could receive different magazines each month. Personally, I won’t be using that option because I like consistency. I also already have a lot of magazine subscriptions (from school fundraisers and gifts from family and friends who know me well).
2. I also like that the service lets you know when one of your selected magazines won’t be delivered. For instance, two of the magazines that I picked don’t publish/won’t be delivered in December, so I will be receiving magazines from my “Substitutes List” (which I created when I set up my initial profile) instead.
Two things that I don’t especially like:
1. Some of the magazines have premium charges in addition to the monthly plan price. Personally, I just prefer a flat rate. I don’t like added costs.
2. It takes about one month to get your first magazine. I ordered one weekly and two monthlies, so that I could share the delivery feedback with you. It took around a month for me to receive both the monthlies and the weekly magazines. I picked Parents (because my subscription recently expired; Entrepreneur (for current and future undertakings) and New York Magazine (because I wanted to try out a weekly magazine AND because I love New York). I have been receiving the weekly consistently since it started coming though. (I must write that this isn’t just a Maghound thing – it’s a magazine subscription thing. Maghound takes about the same amount of time for magazine delivery that I experienced having ordered individual magazines in the past.)
Overall, I think that if you’re a magazine lover, you will enjoy the Maghound membership service. Although it sometimes seems like everything is going digital, I still like print too. I prefer reading magazines/books/etc. in the print format. (I know that I am not the only one!) To get you started, Maghound is offering Mom in the City readers the first month of their service for free with an additional 20% off for the first six months. To get the full details, please visit this Maghound page.
(Be sure to check back next month…Mom in the City will be participating in a special Maghound promotion. You are going to love it-especially if you don’t currently live in NYC. Stay tuned…)
