If You Only Watch One Movie During Winter Recess…

Have you noticed that I don’t review a lot of DVDs anymore? It’s because my kids out-grew a lot of them/have other preferences. However, there is one DVD that has been especially popular around my house lately. You might want to watch it during winter recess…we will.

We love the review copy of Up (4 Disc Combo Pack with Digital Copy and DVD) [Blu-ray] that we recently received. We had actually gone as a family to see this movie in the theater when it opened earlier this year. We all enjoyed the movie a lot then. There was a little something for everyone – a love story as well as action and adventure. (Time even named it the #2 movie of the year.) While the kids primarily enjoyed the interaction between Carl and Russell the “wilderness explorer”, there was plenty for the adults to enjoy also. I’m a softie for a good love story. Although I didn’t cry (like many of my girlfriends did), the love story between Carl and his wife Ellie (which was an impetus for the balloon trip) was touching. The other thing that really stood out to me was the message that it is the every day moments of life (not just the extra special ones) that impact kids the most. When I think about that, I know that it is so true.

In any event that movie has made a (fun) impact on my kids since we saw it earlier this year. When Michael wants to distract me from a train of thought, he yells out “Squirrel!” (as if I’m one of the easily distracted dogs in the movie?!). As for Sean…he enjoys acting like the dog Dug. He pants like a dog and says, “Hi there!” like Dug does in the movie. It’s very cute.

That is why it was no surprise that out of all the extra bonus features included in the set, “Dug’s Special Mission” is my sons’ favorite. They can watch it over (and over) and over again. You can watch a short clip below:

In any event, I highly recommend this movie. It always leaves my family feeling up. (Yes, I know that was pretty lame…lame, but true!)
