School Morning Routine Tips (That Bring Peace!)

school morning routine tips

Names have been withheld for the protection of my little lollygagger…

One of my sons marches to the beat of his own drummer. I enjoy that about him most of the time. The one block of time that I wish he could turn off that “I’m my own person and I move at my own pace” attitude is on school mornings. He likes to ease into the day and takes his time doing everything. This can be a challenge when it comes to getting out of the house on time. Since being late isn’t an option and I like to start days off on a peaceful note, we have come up with two helpful school morning routine tips.

  1. Wake up earlier. That sounds simple enough (and it is), because it gives my son a little bit more time to do things. I’m just not a morning person, so I initially resisted this suggestion that my son made. Finally, I had to make a decision: Do I want that extra 2o minutes of sleep or do I want a peaceful start to my day?
  2. Make a “When I Wake Up in the Morning” list. Waking up earlier was working pretty well in regards to getting my son ready to leave our home on time but I still found myself having to remind my son of the various things that he needed to do each morning. Frankly, I don’t want to do that. I like to teach my kids to be self-motivated and do what they need to do without someone constantly having to remind them. That is why we came up with a little morning routine list. I just wrote it out and stuck it on his closet door.

Basically, the list has 10 things that my son needs to do on school mornings before we leave the house. (He pointed out that I forgot to add “Give Mommy a hug and kiss.” 🙂 ) In any event, if you are having a challenging time getting out of your home on school mornings, then consider a simple list. Then you don’t have to sound like a broken record and you can have a peaceful start to your day.

If you have any other helpful school morning routine tips that work for your family, definitely let me know. Thanks!
