The Closer: Part II: The Show (Semi-Spoiler Alert)

In case you’re not a big television person, The Closer is the hit (it’s cable’s #1 drama series) TNT police show starring Kyra Sedgwick as Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson. The new season premieres next Monday (July 14th), but last night, a group of people (including myself!) were able to see the first show of the season. It was extremely well done.

In any event, I see why this is a number one show. It has a wonderful, multicultural cast and excellent writing. In this episode, there was a surprising (yet believable) twist and ending. Many times, “whodunit” detective shows are usually easy to figure out beforehand (in my opinion). However, in this episode, I never saw THAT piece of the puzzle coming!

Most of all, I like Kyra Sedgwick’s character. Part of the reason is because here character is a strong, powerful woman who still manages to be in great shape and stylishly dressed. The other part is that I like (what I know of) Kyra Sedgwick. In the July issue of O, The Oprah Magazine’s Kyra Sedgwick shares about her environmental involvement in the “AHA! Moment “which you can also read online here. As a mom, my favorite quote from Kyra’s piece was “Mark my words” It’s the soccer moms who will change the world.” (I’m not so quite sure about the “soccer” part, but I totally believe that moms change the world every day.)

(SPOILER ALERT) The only thing that I didn’t like (and this is just because images stick in my mind for a LONG time) was the graphic images. The storyline is about an arson case, so charred, burnt bodies and body parts are shown AND there is a scene where a living character puts on some dead person’s skin to get a fingerprint (yuck!). I went home and told my husband, “You’ll love this show”. (Unlike me, he loves detective shows.) If your taste is like my husband’s, you’ll love this show also.

In any event, I had to run out right after the screening, so I missed the Q&A with Kyra Sedgwick. (I’m Not Obsessed has a great recap of the Q&A here.)
