Charity of the Month: Autism Speaks

Autism’s on my mind.

EVERY 20 MINUTES A CHILD IS DIAGNOSED WITH THIS DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDER AFFECTING COMMUNICATION, LEARNING, AND SOCIAL INTERACTIONS.

Here’s two ways that you can help Autism Speaks, the nation’s top private funder of autism research:

1. My friend, Sean Arnold, is walking in Autism Speaks’ 2009 “Walk Now for Autism” on June 14th. He knows and works with (he’s a teacher – yay!) children that have autism. As he wrote to me: “We need to find a cure, and our best chance is raising money for important research, which includes promising genetic research.”

If you can sponsor Sean in his fight for his students, please donate or get more information here.

2. Do you remember that I mentioned that Diane Birch’s debut album would be connected to my “Charity of the Month”? Well, besides the amazing quality of the actual music, the other thing that I especially like about Diane’s “bible belt” release is that her music company (S-Curve Records) is helping to raise money for charity. For every album purchased from either the iTunes or Amazon links that you find on various media (including in the sidebar of this blog!), they will donate $1 per album to one of six participating charities. Since autism is on my mind, I’m promoting Autism Speaks.

Helping to find a cure for autism is incentive enough to help. However, as an added bonus, I’m going to give one Mom in the City reader a $100 HP gift card (I have another one and I know how much you all seem to like them!) for contributing to Autism Speaks by either (or both!) of the methods mentioned above.

To win, simply donate to Sean’s walk (by 6/14) or purchase Diane Birch’s debut album (by 6/30) through the link on my sidebar. After, indicate that you did so in the “Comments” section below.
