Old School Playground Games with Playworks

Last month, I attended a preview of the New Balance fall 2012 kids’ footwear collection. I will show you the shoes closer to school shopping time. However, I didn’t want to wait to share about Playworks, a group that led the kids in classic recess games with some fun add-ons at the event.

Before the event, I did a little advance research on Playworks. Their mission is “To improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for physical activity and safe, meaningful play.” You all know that I’m a big fan of play in the lives of kids, so I fully support their mission. Seeing some of their instructors playing with the kids at the New Balance event caused me to become even more impressed. (I wish that their program would come to my kids’ school!) Watch this snippet below:

The thing that I appreciate the most about the Playworks site is the “Find Games” section. There, you can sign up to receive a FREE pdf (466 pages) of hundreds of games that Playworks program coordinators use. (Did I mention that it’s FREE?) I have my copy and plan on doing some of the games this summer with my sons and their friends.

What was your favorite old school recess game? I don’t remember mine, but one thing that I really wanted to learn (but never did) was how to double dutch. It’s not too late…
