The First Day of First Grade

Despite our nerves, the first day of school went GREAT. Michael kept saying “First grade is so much better than Kindergarten!” I think that two things in particular helped his transition.

1. Familiarity. There were five kids from his Kindergarten class in his new class. That helped him to feel comfortable right away.

2. His teacher, “Mrs. Z.” Actually, I don’t really remember her name yet, but she was really warm and welcoming. I think that Michael’s (wonderful!) Kindergarten teacher told her how to win Michael over. The trick with him is to give him some type of responsibility and then he feels like he’s part of the team. (He’s SO much like his mother in that way!)

Sean also had a great first day of “home school”. He was eager to get started. It amazed me how using the “I’m the teacher. You can’t act like that in school.” card stopped any misbehaviour on the spot! I’m going to have to keep class in session 24-7! 🙂

Overall, it was a really wonderful day…and no tears were shed. Yes! If you have kids that are school-aged, how was your family’s first day of school this year? Great, I hope.
